BEFORE
Before arriving in the Dominican Republic
Before going to the DR, I had done some research because it was required for the class. I sat there after doing the discussion posts and decided to initiate my own findings prior to going to a whole different country. I have come to the conclusion that this experience is going to be unlike anything I have ever been a part of before.
Aside from my crippling fear of mother nature's creepy pets (insects), I am looking forward to this trip. Knowing the history behind Haiti and the Dominican Republic provided well-formed insight on what to expect when I go. Discrimination is everywhere. Being a POC in America is definitely not the same as a Haitian in the DR given their circumstances. I am very curious to see how this is projected in daily life in the DR.
Nonetheless, I am ready to go with the flow for this service learning trip. I have no expectations of the people. After all, I am entering their space. I am confident that I will able to be fully engaged and get the most out of this experience as I possibly can.
